Our History

Islamia College Gujranwala was established in 1912 as Khalsa High School Gujranwala with the donation of Khalsa Committee, a Sikh educational trust. Sir Louis Dane , the 13th governor of Punjab, laid its foundation. Just six years later on 30 March 1918, it was upgraded to the status of a college and named Guru Nanak Khalsa College Gujranwala. It is one of the oldest colleges of the Punjab.

The foundation stone on the college building shows the name of Sant Attar Singh, a Sikh reformet, who laid the foundation of the college on March 30, 1918.

After the partition of India, Anjuman-i-Islamia Gujranwala took possession of this college and after migration Khalsa Education Council established a new college with same name called Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College. On 25 November 1947, the institution was renamed Islamia College Gujranwala.

In September 1972, the college was nationalized and in 1990 it was upgraded to post-graduate level.

Anjuman Islamia

After the exodus of the Sikhs from the region during the Partition, the Guru Nanak Khalsa College was handed over to the Anjuman Islamia Gujranwala in November 1947 and, as it mostly happens in the sub-continent, Guru Nanak’s college was renamed as Islamia College Gujranwala. Those days Sufi Jamalullah was the president of Anjuman Islamia and he became the administrator of the college. He was succeeded by his son Abdullah Jamal. The college was nationalised in 1972. However, during the Partition mayhem, it had lost 78 kanal of its land to the land grabbers which the college could not get back till date. The Khalsa Education Council, after migrating to India, kept the name and memory of Khalsa college alive and established a college with the same name, Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College, in Ludhiana in 1953 which is still functional. The Islamia College was upgraded to postgraduate college and renamed as Govt Post Graduate Islamia College Gujranwala.As per directions of the Higher Education Department, Government of the Punjab the BSFY Program started in this college from the year 2020 in the Subjects of Chemistry, Economics, English, Information Security, Islamiyat, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, Urdu, Zoology and once again renamed as Govt Islamia Graduate College Gujranwala. It has 4,000 students. Its alumni include poet Mukhtar Siddiqui, Altaf Guahar, historian Dr Kirpal Singh and former President of Pakistan Muhammad Rafiq Tarar.

Department of English

The Department of English, as a full-fledged department, was established by Prof. M. Aslam Seikhu, the then Principal of the college, in 2010. The same year, admissions for M.A. English were offered under the supervision of Prof. M. Amar bil Adal, the Head of English Department and the guidance of the scholarly figure Prof. Ibn-e-Hasan Shah (late). In the following decade, the Department performed excellently and produced remarkable results in M.A. English. However, with the change in education policy, the Department started offering admissions for BS English, Morning classes in 2019 and Evening classes in 2020. The BS Programme was inaugurated by the then Head of English Department, Prof. Sarfraz Ahmad Malik, who infused it with the same spirit that had been the hallmark of the English Department. Additionally, the Department facilitates the students with a well-equipped library and an equal opportunity for cocurricular activities. The Department is in full swing presently under the headship of Prof. Hafiz Jameel Ahmad.
